A Definite Necessity For A Well Upkept Roof

Something as simple as water draining off your roof can create major complications if left unattended for months or years at a time and in many homes, gutters go unchecked until they stop doing their job.

When you call Gold Standard, even for a routine check-up, our experts know how to spot anything from a small leak to something that may need to be fixed sooner rather than later. Even dirt and debris could eventually pose serious problems if left unchecked but this is why you can rely on our crew giving you an honest quote for any kind of work that needs to be done on that same visit as well.

Gold Standard Restorations also understands the importance of rapid response to an emergency situation. That’s why if you want to avoid damage from water, overflowing gutters, or need a simple cleaning or repair, we are the contractors for you. While most commonly made of aluminum, there are a wide variety of materials, colors, and sizes to choose from when thinking about adding or changing the gutters on your home. Here are some facts and answers to many common questions that homeowners typically have:

Are There Different
Types of Gutters?

Gutters

Common Shapes of Gutters

K Style Gutters

K-style gutters are the most common type for homes constructed in the last 50 years. They are probably the style that comes to mind when you think of gutters. They are flat on the back and bottom and the front has the look of crown molding and usually come in two basic sizes, 5 and 6-inch.

K Half Round Gutters

Half-round gutters look exactly like they sound; half-round. These are the older style of gutters and are less likely to be installed on your home because one of the key disadvantages of this system is that they are more flimsy and also hold less water.

Types of Materials Used

Aluminum is the most common material for gutters in our area. This material is lightweight and doesn’t rust when confronted with water, like other materials. This material can be custom formed on-site to fit any length and allow for seamless runs. They are available in many different colors as well and they can be painted to any color you like and are the most common style that our professionals install.

Steel gutters are strong and, depending on the finish, some can also resist rust. The downside of using steel is that these styles are generally more heavy, expensive, and regardless of finish, will eventually rust over time. These types of gutters are more commonly installed on commercial buildings or multi-family properties like apartments or condos.

Copper gutters are one of the most expensive styles you can choose from for your home because of both the price of the material and the cost of installation. Copper is less durable and prone to dents and can easily be altered after several intense storms and, unfortunately, will eventually start to turn green over the years. For installation, copper gutters come in 10-foot sections and must be soldered together to cover any distance over 10 feet. While seamless and appealing, this choice is a bit out of budget for many homeowners.

Vinyl gutters are installed more on homes that do not experience the crazy weather that the Windy City brings. It is lightweight and the material is prone to color fade over the years and can crack during the harsh winters that Chicago Suburbs endure. As a professional, honest, and reliable company, we do not recommend this material and do not recommend installing them on your property.

What About Gutter Guards?

Gutter guards can be a wonderful addition to your gutter system, especially if your property has a lot of tree coverage or if your gutters are prone to constant clogging from debris. Different gutter guards can be applied like screens, metal pieces with slits cut throughout them, and even foam inserts that can be put inside the gutter.

These options, however, also have the issue of allowing driving heavy rains to run over the top of the gutters which allow rainwater to cascade over the top, flowing right off your roof instead of the area you need it to go.

Most gutter guards can be added to your existing gutter system and will reduce, but not eliminate, the need for gutter cleaning and maintenance. However, these additions are not a sure-fire way to eliminate the need for gutter maintenance, can be expensive, and will still allow some debris to build up while eventually clogging your system over time.
