Thermoplastic Polyolefin:
What It Can Do For Your Home

Thermoplastic Polyolefin, more commonly known as TPO, is a relatively new product in the world of roofing. For many years, both commercial and residential roofers have relied on many different styles of roofs ranging from Built-Up Roofing (BUR) and metal roofs to Modified Bitumen Roofing and Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM).

While most of the aforementioned styles of roofing are used mainly in commercial settings like warehouses or strip malls, they are gaining a lot of attention on the residential side of the trade, like in multi-level apartment complexes and duplexes. While the name is quite complex, Gold Standard Restorations will turn it into a simple process from the quote and installation all the way to the finishing and touches and your final approval.

What is TPO?
and it's Benefits!

What TPO Is and The Benefits It Brings

While TPO might be recently entering the playing field, it is already holding its own in the battle for the top of many home and business owners, but what is it? Thermoplastic Polyolefin is a single-ply roofing membrane that was introduced in the early 1990s to be a more economical and energy-efficient alternative to many of the PVC products used both back then, and now.

The membrane consists of 3 layers:

  • TPO Polymer base
  • Polyester-reinforced fabric center
  • Thermoplastic polyolefin compounded top ply

TPO roofs are commonly made around the country but the fillers going inside may vary per state. Common fillers are talc, fiberglass, carbon fiber, wollastonite, and Metal Oxy Sulfate. For some roofs, rubber is used and the common go-to is ethylene-propylene or EPDM but every home and building is different and our professional team at Gold Standard will give you all the options so you can make the right choice.

While this might be a new style of roofing for many flat or low-slope roofs, it also comes with a significant amount of benefits that many home and business owners will likely see reflected on upcoming utility bills. Some of the pros and cons of converting to a TPO roof or having a brand new roof installation include cost, durability, and how quickly it can be installed.

If you or your business is on a tight budget, this can be a great choice to make because the manufacturing of this product is relatively inexpensive. It is also much cheaper in labor costs because it’s not made of hundreds of shingles and with many low-slope roofs, it can take anywhere from just a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the size of your property.

How Well TPO Can Hold Up

The durability of this type of material is yet another great benefit of having it installed for your property. Even though it’s mainly used in the commercial trade, it can still prove useful in the residential side of construction as well and when you have Gold Standard professionals install it for you, it’ll do more than just save you money.

TPO is made of a very strong membrane that holds up against more than just heavy rains. The way it is installed through either a very strong adhesive or mechanically fastened, which proves very useful against the major winds we get all over the state. The mechanical installation speaks for itself but the strong adhesive option is created after the membrane is rolled out and a hot air gun is used to create a seamless connection between the sheets.

With either option, in the Northern Suburbs of Chicago TPO will hold up strongly against the extreme gusts that come our way. Once installed, however, maintenance is an easy task for any cleaning crew, and repairs to the membrane are usually very simple. Many TPO roofs can last up to 15 to 20 years if properly maintained and GSR can help keep it strong.

While you have many options to choose from for a new or remodeled roof, thermoplastic polyolefin is a very economical option for the roofing systems already out there. The main reason being that when you have it installed, it typically comes with a white finish that helps keep your building cool during hot and sunny days by reflecting a large amount of the sun rays that come bellowing down on your building.

This, of course, will keep you from running the A/C all day, keeping the interior of your home or office cool, and saving you money on your utility bill!
